Matsuri and Enka

Matsuri and Enka

(April 17, 2009) Today I was listening to Daniel Kikawa’s seminar that he gave during our last International RJC Conference in February at Walnut Creek, CA. I was again reminded how many of our Western traditions which have become part of the Christian Church have their origin in pagan customs. I have no trouble with the Christmas tree and Easter eggs, but worry when in Japan we try to use non-Christian Buddhist and Shinto practices in our churches. His seminar is worth listening to and learning from. In the seminar he mentions Pastor Kusunoki and his use of enka or ondo for the gospel. You can hear this at Harvest Ondo.
